Good post. A lot of the reason why complex problems go unsolved is because often they have "invisible" elements to them, the current economic crisis included. In product development, the more prominent tangible elements tend to hog the spotlight at the expense of less visible, but mission-critical, elements.

I wrote a post about this a couple of years ago that yours reminded me of :)

About "Prevention is under-appreciated": "Ariel" have running TV Ad with same topic - preventing the dirt to stick to cloths after they are washed with the product. And it is convincing, i think (and boring as all Ads of these products are :) So, may be the way of telling is important as much or even more as focus groups.

Not working at P&G.

This is so true.
Managers fighting fires vs putting the "rocks" first (7 habits of highly effective people); rocks like prevention.

I use checklists in my business and consulting work to monitor all kinds of different procedures. It is simply amazing how something monitored tends to not only get done better but new innovations and improvement usually come up as a result too.
