Friday Reading: What Happened to the Financial Markets?

in Observations

Scaredy Cat

In the new forums in the Personal MBA Community, Gary Petersen asks:

I’d like to become more informed about current economic conditions and decisions and about how they relate to conditions and decisions from the history of the United States. Does any one have suggestions on who is good at writing about this? What should I be reading to be better informed?

Here are the three best resources I’ve found to explain what’s happening in the financial markets – they make great “Friday Reading”:

Have you come across any articles or books that have helped you understand the turmoil in the financial markets? Please share by leaving a comment!

Hi,

Not directly related to this crash, but I think Roger Lowenstein’s book about the fall of Long Term Capital Management back in 1998 is a great way to understand that environment in preparation to understanding the current mess.

The Black Swan, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

There’s a reason everyone’s reading this one right now… it pretty much spells out what happened. The failure of LTCM was simply the dry run the 2008 crisis.

I think http://www.scribd.com/doc/2190705/CDO-Powerpoint-SubPrime-Primer does a great job of explaining the subprime portion of this crisis. Beyond that, the journal has had some of the best coverage I’ve read.

Thanks for posting this more widely, Josh. To back up what Justin MC said, here are three Wall Street Journal blogs that I’ve added to my regular reading list:

MarketBeat: http://blogs.wsj.com/marketbeat/
Real Time Economics: http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/
The Wallet: http://blogs.wsj.com/wallet/

All have produced useful information on the topic since I asked my original question. Gary
